Perhaps each generation views the problems they face as unprecedented in scope and menace. Climate risk and environmental conservation is what motivates me. What happens when people and economies are displaced and disrupted by floods and fires? What happens when fields no longer produce, and agricultural productivity is hurt by degraded soil, changes in temperature, precipitation, and water availability? If we do not act, what will future generations say of us? I think they would ask — why did we not do more, considering the solutions to our problems would have created jobs, reduced dependence on foreign energy, and resulted in plentiful cheap power. I hope it is not with a sad irony that we fail to meet these challenges, despite the solutions being in our economic best interest.
Blue Rock is my answer to these questions — it is a company dedicated to increasing the capital supply for renewable energy infrastructure, and making the marketplace for financing renewable energy projects more efficient. By charging low fees and delivering an exceptional service to our customers, we can increase the capital availability for renewable energy projects.
Due to cost reductions, improvements in efficiency, and public policy support, institutional investors no longer need to decide between earnings and sustainability. According to Lazard’s “Levelized Cost of Energy Analysis — Version 13.0” (2019) between 2009-2019, the cost to produce electrical power from wind and solar has fallen 70% and 89%, respectively. The cost to produce one megawatt hour of power from a combined cycle gas plant is $56, while the cost to produce one megawatt hour of power from a utility-scale solar photovoltaic plant is $41. Solar is cheaper. Last, wind and solar have no exposure to commodity price volatility. Unlike natural gas prices, we have a pretty good estimate on the cost of sunshine and wind for the next 20 years.
